Big Picture Holiday
My 6-piece afro-funk band, Big Picture Holiday, released it's debut album, Shimmer and Melt, in 2016. The culmination of years of experimentation, this album has influences ranging from Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, and Ornette Coleman to Afrobeat, Ethiopian, and Moroccan music. I think of it as a musical globetrotter’s fresh take on dirty late-night street jazz – sophisticated, sly, and provocative... full of neon lights, shooting stars, and fleeting innuendo.
Whereas most of my 'jazz' recordings were primarily an attempt to capture a moment, for this album I spent quite a few days in post-production trying to get the arranged versions of my music 'just right'. We spent a lot of time beforehand playing clubs in downtown Manhattan, as seen in the videos here....
