AVRAM FEFER TRIO
Ever since I listened to the album, Sonny Rollins Trio Live at The Village Vanguard when I was in high school, I knew that the sax-bass-drums trio format would be the foundation for my approach to playing acoustic jazz. I was immediately drawn to the simple, organic, functionality that this instrumentation provides for telling a musical story. When played well, the combination of these three instruments touches all the right musical bases while drawing on the forces of nature and the laws that nature observes.
I have had the privilege of performing in the trio format with a number of incredible rhythm teams over the years --- Jean-Jacques Avenal and Oliver Johnson, Jack Gregg and John Betsch, Essiet Essiet and Denis Charles, Fred Hopkins and Newman Taylor Baker, Eric Revis and Chad Taylor, Sean Conly and Igal Foni, Michael Bisio and Reggie Nicholson, to name a few...
When it came time to make my first album as a leader, I knew that I wanted to record a trio album with my working band at the time --- with Igal Foni on drums and Eric Revis on bass. We had been playing together regularly as part of a weekly residency at the Knitting Factory, so we knew we were ready and feeling very much in sync ....
After several years and a number of albums with other instrumentations, I came back to the classic trio format to record a couple CD's with Eric Revis and Chad Taylor on bass and drums respectively.
